‘What is a diary as a rule? A document useful to the person who keeps
it. Dull to the contemporary who reads it and invaluable to the student, centuries
afterwards, who treasures it.’
Walter Scott
‘Keep a diary and someday it will keep you’
Mae West
‘In Hollywood now when people die they don't say, 'Did he leave a
will?' but 'Did he leave a diary?'’
Liza Minnelli
‘I never travel without my diary. One should always have something
sensational to read in the train.’
Oscar Wilde
Diaries and records kept by people of the past prove invaluable for the historians of today providing an insight into the lives of ordinary people. We want to provide such a record for the future - a picture of life as lived in Mere and district on one day in the twenty-first century.
Diary day gives you the opportunity to record your day, your thoughts, your opinions, for history. Be a Samuel Pepys, a Mrs.Dale, a Liz Jones or even an Adrian Mole and write up your day for the archives.
Write up an account of the events of YOUR DAY. The detail is up to you and you can be anonymous or as open as you like.
Dear Diary forms will be available in Mere Library and possibly, if space permits, in the festival's big green programme or just use your own resources.
Please return your diary record to the Library by the end of October.
It is hoped that it may be possible to publish a selection of the diarists
but, in any event, this unique record of a Mere day will provide a resource
for future historians and... just possibly
..an exhibition by Mere Museum in 2108.
