Out and About in Mere

Mere is an excellent base for a short break - nestling beneath the Downs it is steeped in history and full of secrets and surprises. While you take up your literary pursuits, the rest of the family can explore, climb Castle Hill, walk on White Sheet Nature Reserve, go clay pigeon shooting, fly hawks on Mere Down, walk at nearby Stourhead Gardens or visit Longleat House.

One can have a drink or a meal at one of the local hostelries or restaurants, visit the shops, museum & library or the churches, just as Samantha Newbury, one of our winners, did when attending the festival a couple of years back. She was so struck with the place that she penned a piece which she posted on her website.
